avoiding identity theft

This afternoon I was looking on the government’s website about avoiding identity theft and while I figured that first and foremost they’d talk about identity theft on the internet, their first two recommendations had nothing to do with going online.  For example, their second recommendations is to get a shredder and to make sure that you use it to shred all of the following documents before discarding them in the trash: charge receipts, copies of credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, checks and bank statements, expired credit cards, and credit offers you get in the mail.  It seems like solid advice to me…
