There are two main types of hdpe. They can be high density polyethylene or low density polyethylene. The low density has many uses but is not as strong as hdpe which is considered to be three times as strong. One of the pluses of its use is that it does not rot. You will not have to worry about it breaking down quickly. It is made so strong that many environmentalists worry about its effects in landfills. Make sure that any hdpe you use meets governmental standards.
