A chief technical officer’s job entails dealing with important scientific and technical issues within an organization. A chief technical officer supervises all the technical staff of a company. A chief technical officer also oversees various processes which involve industry-specific technologies. A chief technical officer’s work may also at times include dabbling in research and development activities. The range of responsibilities of a chief technical officer can vary with the size of the company in question. While in small organizations, a chief technical officer’s job would involve exclusive technical responsibilities such as IT solutions delivery and IT security, in large companies, a chief technical officer is given extensive PR, liaising, business development, and strategy planning roles. A chief technical officer can also play a major role in creating a technology vision for a company. The origin of the term chief technical officer dates back to the 1960s, when a number of companies created special laboratory environs for their scientists to allow them to carry out their research activities in peace. The research laboratories were headed by research officers designated as research heads. Over time, with the increasing importance accorded to these research laboratories, the research heads began to be re-designated as chief technical officers.
